The Premise: America IS a Christian Nation You, the Body of Christ in America, are the jury. The case has been decided against the premise for much of the 20th Century, and all of the early 21st. It will now be decided anew. Your responsibility is to weigh the evidence, not from what you read in the newspapers or from what you hear historical revisionists say, but from the actual writings of the founding fathers and other government leaders of the past. A partial list of the evidence follows. It is partial because of the sheer magnitude of the writings. Also, it is partial because it is the jury's duty to seek other sources for additional evidence. Enjoy the journey to historical enlightenment! 1. Patrick Henry, known primarily for his "give me liberty or give me death" speech, had enormous influence on his peers at the time of the American Revolution. He said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ." 2. Northwest Ordinance - July 13, 1787, a set of standards issued by Congress which must be met by territories under American control for statehood - "Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall be forever encouraged." 3. James Madison, known as the "Chief Architect of the U. S. Constitution", and the 4th President of the United States, wrote on June 20, 1785, "Religion is the basis and Foundation of Government." Madison attended Princeton University, which had as its creed, "Cursed be all that learning which is contrary to the cross of Christ." 4. President George Washington said, "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. It is impossible to rightly govern...without God and the Bible." 5. Samuel Chase, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Justice of the first Supreme Court of the United States, appointed by President George Washington wrote, "By our form of government, the Christian religion is the established religion, and all sects and denominations of Christians are placed upon the same equal footing and are equally entitled to protection in their religious liberties" 6. The Virginia Bill of Rights says, "...all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the Dictates of Conscience; and it is the mutual Duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, Love, and Charity towards each other." (note that "religion", as used here and in MOST of the founding writings and official documents, is synonymous with the CHRISTIAN faith) 7. Benjamin Franklin said that it was our duty to acknowledge our dependence on God and pray that He would, "Take this province under His protection, confound the designs and defeat the attempts of its enemies, and unite our hearts and strengthen our hands in every undertaking...and for our defense and our security in this time of danger." 8. Thomas Jefferson, the primary contributor to the Declaration of Independence and our 3rd President, said, "God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever." It is worthwhile to note that Jefferson considered his most important post to be that of serving as Chairman of the School Board of Washington D.C., and that he adopted the first plan of public education in that city, using the Bible and a hymnal as the primary textbooks. 9. The Supreme Court of the United States in 1892 said, "These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation...we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth."
